Congress Heads to Recess without a Solution to Problems with VA Construction

Thursday, May 21, 2015

Congress heads out of town later this afternoon for its week-long Memorial Day recess. In all
likelihood, it will not authorize additional funding to complete the Veterans Administration’s
(VA) hospital construction project in Aurora, Colorado. The VA estimates that the funds under
its current authorization will run out around May 24, at which time work on the project will
stop.

The Aurora project was one of two issues that U.S. House Speaker John Boehner chose to
address yesterday in a floor speech. The Speaker made it clear that authorizing more money for
this project puts yet another patch on the beleaguered construction project without any long term
plan to complete the project or address the culture of irresponsibility in the VA’s construction
management. There is no agreement on a bill that would address both of those issues.
