List of Statistical Reports

Statistical reports are available for all SFAA members in electronic format on the SFAA Member Access portion of this website. Statistical reports are available to non-members for purchase. Information about our data collection process, descriptions of reports, and a printable report order form are available through this page.

There are two primary sources of data for SFAA statistical reports. The first source is financial statement data. The SFAA collects financial statements from affiliated companies that write fidelity and/or surety business. For a list and descriptions of reports based on financial statement data, click here. SFAA collects detailed statistics from affiliated companies that write fidelity and/or surety business. For a list and descriptions of reports based on Statistical Plan data, click here. The year listed after the report title is the most recent year available for that report.

Construction Loss Severity Study - 2008

This is an industry Construction Loss Severity Study ("Study") for contractors operating in the United States and Puerto Rico. The Study includes the development of a model for calculating both the Probable Expected Loss ("PEL") and Probable Maximum Loss ("PML") for contract surety losses on a contractor level. The model is designed to support the risk management needs of surety companies and related businesses that operate in the United States contract surety industry. The Study is in Adobe .pdf format and includes an introduction and background of the data collection. Statistical results of the data collection are included in this document. Also, an explanation of the development and application of the PEL and PML model is provided. The PEL and PML model is in excel format and calculates PEL and PML figures based on criteria supplied by the user.

Top 100 Writers of Fidelity and Surety Bonds - 2009 Preliminary
Exhibits showing the rankings of the top 100 writers of fidelity bonds and the top 100 writers of surety bonds. The ranking includes only those members and statistical affiliates of the SFAA which have furnished us with copies of their Annual Statements.

Fifty Largest Writers by State - 2009 Preliminary
Exhibits showing the rankings of the fifty largest writers of fidelity bonds and the fifty largest writers of surety bonds for each state and U.S. territory.

Industry Insurance Expense Exhibit Data - 2009 Preliminary
Exhibit based on the Insurance Expense Exhibits of all members and statistical affiliates of the SFAA. This report shows the consolidated industry results for each of the last five calendar years.

Statistical Reports: Statistical Plan Data

All 2004 statistical reports have been updated to reflect the most recent data reported. Please note that data from a large carrier has been excluded from the results shown in the 2004 statistical reports because the carrier was unable to verify their results. Therefore, all 2004 statistical reports will remain preliminary until this issue is resolved.

Cause of Loss Experience Financial Institutions Bonds - 2008 Preliminary
Report reflecting the consolidated results of all companies which report statistics to the SFAA in accordance with the SFAA Fidelity and Surety Statistical Plan. Report provides the breakdown of fidelity losses paid on a peril by peril basis for each of the major categories of bonds.

Fast Track Fidelity and Surety Results - 2009
Report providing a projection of the Countrywide Classification Experience Report. This report usually is released in April, several months prior to the release of the Country Classification Experience Report. The following information is provided:

• direct premiums written
• direct premiums earned
• direct losses incurred
• direct loss ratio

for the following categories:

• total surety
• contract surety
• commercial surety
• total fidelity
• financial institutions
• mercantile establishments and governmental entities
